Join our contributing writer and TSI team member Peter, also known as Perafilozof, as he shares 12 crucial tips to help you kickstart your journey in the popular city-building and settlement management game, Against the Storm. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned player, these tips will set you on the right path towards success.
Tip 1: Utilize the ALT Key for Enhanced Efficiency
One simple yet effective tip is to use the ALT key on your keyboard. This handy shortcut enables an overlay on your screen, displaying all the current workplaces and the settlers assigned to them. By left-clicking on a settler’s portrait, you can easily manage and reassign them to different workplaces.
Tip 2: Prioritize Settlers’ Morale by Building Homes
Keeping your settlers’ morale high is crucial in Against the Storm. Low morale can lead to settlers leaving your settlement, resulting in failure. To prevent this, start by building homes for your settlers after establishing woodcutter camps and securing a sufficient supply of wood. Homes cost wood to build and provide the necessary morale boost through the eternal fire in the ancient hearth. A well-maintained hearth ensures a thriving settlement.
Tip 3: Unlock and Utilize Species-Specific Homes
As you progress in each new settlement-building mission, you’ll unlock different types of homes specific to each settler species. However, you can only unlock a limited number of them. Choose the home that benefits the species of settlers with the lowest morale, providing them an extra boost to prevent them from leaving.
Tip 4: Feed Settlers Complex Foods for High Morale
Another method to maintain high settler morale is by feeding them complex foods they enjoy. By expanding the settlers’ panels and examining the food icons in the top left, you can learn about each species’ favorite complex foods. Consider the overlapping tastes and ensure a well-balanced diet for your settlers.
Tip 5: Build a Trading Post Strategically
Constructing a trading post marks the countdown to the next trader’s arrival. While you can build multiple trading posts, it won’t attract more traders. One trading post is sufficient, and it should be constructed early in the settlement-building process, following woodcutter camps and shelters. Carefully evaluate the prices of items and sell surplus goods that are not essential for local use.
Tip 6: Optimize Resource Exchange for Maximum Profit
Although raw resources may seem abundant and valuable, refrain from selling them directly. Instead, combine raw resources with others to craft more expensive or multiple less expensive items, significantly increasing their overall value. These middle or final products fetch higher prices than the initial raw resources, enhancing your profits. Remember to exclude rare items and packaged goods from this strategy.
Tip 7: Match Settler Specialization with Production Buildings
To boost production and efficiency, assign settlers with the appropriate species specialization to corresponding production or gathering buildings. Hover your mouse over a settler’s portrait to view their specialization in the top left. Likewise, click on a building to find its specialization displayed to the right. This matching tactic ensures optimal output and prevents wasted potential.
Tip 8: Leverage Hearth Bonuses and Burning Fuel
Hearths offer special bonuses when burning extra fuel. Depending on your settlement’s circumstances, different bonuses can be advantageous. If the forest is angered by excessive woodcutting, resulting in new glades opening and a high population, burning extra wood or coal will mitigate the negative impact. Other fuel types provide situational bonuses, significantly benefiting your settlement during specific times.
Tip 9: Optimize Building Placement for Efficiency
Strategic building placement plays a vital role in maximizing efficiency. Position homes near the main hearth to keep settlers warm and secure. Buildings involved in item production and utilization should be placed close to the town hall, acting as the main stockpile for quick deliveries. Buildings responsible for raw resource collection can be positioned on the edges of your settlement.
Tip 10: Clear Trees to Reveal Fertile Land
Upon discovering fertile land, you may encounter trees obstructing potential farming areas. To uncover more fertile tiles, cut down all the trees surrounding the field. Utilize the marking tool to designate trees for cutting and enable the option to cut only marked trees in your woodcutter’s camp. This prevents accidentally opening new glades that may present unprepared challenges.
Tip 11: Trade for Tools to Unlock Rewards and Opportunities
When given the opportunity, trade for tools as they are often essential for completing tasks in newly opened glades. These tasks can yield substantial rewards beneficial for both scenario completion and the settlers’ well-being. Ensure you have an adequate supply of tools to seize these opportunities.
Tip 12: Explore Alternative Recipes and Resources
When crafting new items or solving mini tasks within glades, always check for alternative resources and recipes. Most items have a radial menu that allows you to switch between available resources. Having alternative stockpiles ready can save the day when certain items are unavailable. Resource versatility is key to unlocking the full potential of your settlement.
Against the Storm is a small yet immersive game, enriched by interconnected gameplay systems and mechanics. By implementing these tips, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate and excel in this captivating strategy game. Enjoy the journey!
