Baldur’s Gate 3: Unveiling the Secrets of the Dank Crypt Sarcophagus Trap

In the treacherous confines of the Dank Crypt in Baldur’s Gate 3 lurks a trap capable of obliterating your entire party. Unless, of course, you know how to navigate through it unscathed. If you’d rather avoid the spectacle of watching your companions explode, we’ve got some hints and tips to share with you.

The Perils of the Dank Crypt Trap

The trap in the Dank Crypt is a deadly combination of greasy vents on the floor and fiery bolts launched from gargoyle heads on the walls. When the fire and grease meet, a cataclysmic explosion ensues, leaving no survivors in its wake. Frankly, it’s best not to toy with this trap. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, there are alternative methods to bypass it.

Disarming the Sarcophagus Trap

The safest route is to disarm the trap entirely. This option may require you to leave the Dank Crypt and return later with the necessary tools. To disarm the trap, you’ll need a Trap Disarm Toolkit. You may obtain one of these from a vendor named Arron, located just north of the main entrance in the Emerald Grove. Arron will be more than willing to sell or trade with you. Once you possess one or two toolkits, make your way back to the Dank Crypt.

It’s wise to keep multiple toolkits on hand at all times. Successfully disarming the trap allows you to keep the toolkit; however, failure will result in its destruction. To disarm the trap, right-click on the Sarcophagus and select the Disarm option. Take your shot at thwarting the trap’s devastating power.

Foiling the Trap’s Activation

To prevent the trap from triggering, the simplest solution is to cover the grease vents with boxes. The image above indicates the locations of all the vents. Drag and drop boxes strategically around the room to cover them. This clever technique proves to be remarkably useful throughout your adventures in Baldur’s Gate 3.

To move an item, stand near it and click, drag, and drop it within a certain radius. Should the need arise, you can effectively hopscotch items across the room. Once all the vents are covered, you’ll be protected from the grease onslaught. However, there’s still the matter of the fiery bolts. Take a close look at the pillars and locate a button on one of them. Pressing this button will deactivate the bolts, but only after they have been launched.

If you wish, interact with the tomb and select Open. Then, use the button to disable the arrows. Be warned, though, as an errant box or the placement of a party member could still result in some damage. Keep your Healing Words and potions ready, just in case.

Revelations Found Within the Sarcophagus

Unveil the secrets concealed within the coffin and discover a key known as The Watcher’s Guide and an Engraved Key. The Watcher’s Guide is a spear that inflicts 1-8 Piercing damage. Considered an Uncommon weapon, it possesses the trait of Death’s Promise. Missing a target with this spear grants the wielder the ability to utilize True Strike on their next Attack Roll against the same target. True Strike provides an advantage in combat. Additionally, proficiency with this weapon type grants the user the ability to execute a Rush Attack, enabling them to charge forward and strike the first enemy in their path without provoking attacks of opportunity.

As for the Engraved Key, it will be added to your Keychain instead of being a separate item in your Inventory. The Keychain conveniently stores all the keys you’ve acquired. To check which keys are in your possession, simply right-click and select Open to view them.

The Dank Crypt’s Sarcophagus is a dangerous puzzle to solve, but with the right knowledge and strategy, you’ll emerge enriched with valuable relics and unscathed from its deadly contraptions.
