I don’t know about you, but I’ve been eagerly anticipating Bones Season 10 Episode 2 all week. After the shocking premiere, it was clear that this episode would have us reaching for the tissue box. And it delivered.
Dealing with Sweets’ Legacy
The most remarkable aspect of this episode was the way Sweets’ death was handled. Although he wasn’t physically present, his influence was palpable. The characters were motivated by his memory as they worked to solve the case, and his absence had a profound impact on everyone.
At the start of the episode, Booth blamed himself for Sweets’ demise, believing he should have been the one to serve the fatal warrant. This sense of guilt is likely to linger throughout Bones Season 10. Later on, Booth adopted Sweets’ perspective in their investigation, which surprisingly brought them closer to cracking the case. Even Brennan acknowledged the value of Sweets’ insights, showing her growth as a character. She has become more open-minded and receptive to perspectives beyond pure science.
Honoring Sweets with Dignity
Bones Producer Stephen Nathan promised a respectful treatment of Sweets’ death, and he delivered. Through the study of Sweets’ bones and handwriting, we were given the opportunity to delve deeper into his character. The poignant revelation that he wanted to name the baby Seeley tugged at our heartstrings once more.
The episode also introduced us to Agent Aubrey, who clearly serves as a replacement for Sweets. The good news is that he is a likable character, and it won’t be long before he and Booth develop a solid friendship. However, the episode left us wanting more development in Booth and Brennan’s relationship. The sudden arguments about Booth’s weapon purchases felt out of place and lacked the necessary buildup. Additionally, we yearn to see the characters grapple with the aftermath of Booth’s three-month incarceration and witness the changes it has wrought within him.
Sweets’ Farewell
On a positive note, Sweets’ murder was solved, and the conspiracy was put to rest. The funeral was a tender and intimate affair, attended by his closest friends who had become his family. Brennan acknowledged the profound impact Sweets had on their lives, expressing how their relationships with him shaped who they are today. As they spread his ashes overlooking Washington D.C., the group shared a poignant moment by singing “Put the Lime in the Coconut,” a song that always brought Sweets joy.
This touching ending served not only as a tribute to Sweets but also as a bonding experience for the characters. Daisy, carrying Sweets’ child, is now destined to become closer to Booth and Brennan. Caroline’s presence throughout the episode was also appreciated, further enriching the emotional fabric. The small-scale funeral was a fitting tribute to Sweets’ character.
