Unlocking the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst: An In-Depth Guide

Introduction

The Vex Mythoclast, once notorious in the original Destiny game, has returned to Destiny 2. However, obtaining this coveted weapon is no easy feat. Defeating Atheon, Time’s Conflux in the Vault of Glass Raid is the key, but the chances of acquiring it are slim. Once acquired, the journey continues to unlock its Catalyst, which requires a second Raid run-through and the completion of five memory exercises and secret hunts. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the steps to obtain the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst and explain its benefits upon completion.

How to Acquire the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst

Scattered throughout the Vault of Glass are five hidden plates. These plates activate when a Guardian holding the Mythoclast stands on them, triggering the spawn of Oracles around the specific plate’s area. These Oracles must be eliminated in the order they appear before a gong sound signifies success. Failing to eliminate them in the correct order only requires a repetition of the process without further penalty.

Plate 1 and Oracle Locations

To begin the Catalyst questline, head right from the Raid’s initial spawn point. After completing the encounter, locate a cave near the cliff in the rightmost area. This cave contains the first plate. The Oracles associated with Plate 1 spawn in the following locations and order:

  1. Inside the cave with the plate.
  2. In a cave to the right of the plate cave. Travel to the white stone area with the enemy spawn fog and find a cave up and to the right. The Oracle will appear at the back.
  3. At the white stone structure behind the spawn area. Look below the overhang for the Oracle.

Plate 2 and Oracle Locations

The second plate is found inside the Vault itself. Follow the path downwards until you reach a large green chasm. Jump into the pit and immediately turn around. Look for a small opening in the metalwork that leads to a hidden path. Follow this path, descending until you see the Templar’s Well area marker appear. The plate will be located in a nearby blue room. The Oracles associated with Plate 2 spawn in the following locations and order:

  1. Below and behind the secret chest in the area.
  2. Directly above the plate.
  3. Directly across from and above the plate.
  4. Same as the second Oracle location.

Plate 3 and Oracle Locations

After completing the Templar boss fight, head to the leftmost side of the area and search for a small opening in the wall. This opening leads to another secret chest, across from which is another small opening blocked by a box. Kick the box down and follow the cave system until you reach a large area with a Vex door to the left. Beyond the open door, you will find Plate 3. The Oracles associated with Plate 3 spawn in the following locations and order:

  1. To the left of the door, inside a dark cave.
  2. Return to the first cave and turn left, facing the plate’s direction.
  3. In a pitch-black area, make a 180-degree turn. The Oracle will spawn in the corner.
  4. In the plate room, up and to the left.
  5. Same as the first Oracle location.
  6. Just outside the Oracle room, up and to the left.

Plate 4 and Oracle Locations

The fourth plate is located at the top of The Chasm, the large area before the Gatekeeper/Atheon encounter. Look for several platforms that appear and disappear. Do not descend any of them. Instead, turn right at the top of the area and jump down to the outcropping. Follow the wall until you find the plate. The Oracles associated with Plate 4 spawn in the following locations and order:

  1. Return to the entrance of The Chasm and look left. Follow the platforms into a long, dark cave. Wait for the Oracle to spawn in the middle.
  2. Jump onto the platform mentioned in the first step, then turn around and jump across the rocky outcroppings until you can’t go any further. Look down into the pit on your left to find the Oracle tucked in a corner.
  3. Same as the first Oracle location.
  4. Go through the same dark cave as in the first step, but this time proceed to the opening at its end. Jump to the small outcropping to your right and continue around the corner and down to the level below. The Oracle spawns in the dark corner.
  5. The platform just above the plate.
  6. Same as the second Oracle location.
  7. In the air to the right of the platforms leading to the plate.

Plate 5 and Oracle Locations

The final plate also resides in The Chasm, alongside Plate 4. You will see an inactive Vex gate in the distance. Standing at the gate and looking back up the pit, you’ll find the fifth plate on a rocky outcropping to the right. You can reach this plate by jumping down from the end of the dark cave mentioned earlier. The Oracles for Plate 5 spawn around the outcropping, appearing in multiple waves. The yellow Gatekeeper hallway serves as a useful orientation point. The Oracle waves are as follows:

Wave 1:

  • Far-right, or 90 degrees from the boss door.
  • Middle, facing the boss door.
  • Near-left from the middle.

Wave 2:

  • Far-right.
  • Far-left.
  • Mid-left.
  • Far-left.

Wave 3:

  • Near-left.
  • Near-right.
  • Near-left.
  • Middle.
  • Directly behind the pillar.

Wave 4:

  • Far-left.
  • Near-left.
  • Far-left.
  • Far-right.
  • Middle.
  • Near-left.
  • Behind.

If all steps are completed correctly, the message “The Oracles are satiated. The whispers fade into a final refrain” will appear. Proceed to the activated Vex gate, which displays an image of the Whisper of the Worm mission on the moon Io. Step into the image to receive the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst.

To unlock the Catalyst’s full power, you must accumulate 700 kills with the Mythoclast. Once activated, the weapon’s Stability increases with the number of Overcharge stacks.

That’s it! While completing the entire quest within one Raid run is necessary, following these steps will grant you a fully-powered Vex Mythoclast and Catalyst. For more Destiny 2 guides, be sure to check out our other articles.
