Riot Unveils New Mythic Chromas with Final Boss Veigar

An Elevated Version of Chromas with Recolored Visual Effects

Riot Games is set to release a game-changing feature in League of Legends called ‘Mythic Chromas.’ These new chromas will take customization to the next level by offering not only different color options for outfits and skins but also revamped visual effects for abilities.

A Refreshing Add-On for Skins

Chromas have long been a popular addition to the game as they allow players to personalize their champions with a variety of colored outfits. Typically, chromas involve a simple recoloring of the champion’s base model or skins. Unlike creating intricate new skins, producing chromas with different hues is a breeze.

As a result, many new skins now come bundled with a set of chromas. However, these chromas usually only alter the appearance of the outfit, leaving abilities and visual effects unaffected. For example, if a skin features blue ability particles and visual effects, equipping a red chroma will change the outfit to red but retain the original blue effects.

The Cost of Customization

Despite the minimal effort required to create chromas, Riot still charges a hefty 290 RP for each color variant in the shop. However, players can save a bit by purchasing the entire bundle at a slight discount. During the Essence Emporium event, older chromas can be acquired using blue essence. But for the latest skins, RP is the currency of choice. In fact, at times, the full set of chromas can cost more than the skin itself.

Introducing Mythic Chromas

To enhance the customization experience, Riot is now introducing a premium version of chromas called ‘Mythic Chromas.’ DW Platypus, a Riot representative responsible for addressing questions and concerns about League of Legends skins, recently announced the arrival of Mythic Chromas on Reddit. These elevated chromas will not only feature new textures but also highly requested recolored visual effects for abilities.

The texture changes in Mythic Chromas will be minimal, similar to the Ashen Knight Pyke Emberwoken Chroma. Additionally, the Emberwoken chromas for Ashen Knight Pyke and Ashen Knight Pantheon will be updated to include recolored visual effects, as they are designed to be Mythic Chromas themselves.

Mythic Chromas in Action

To showcase the concept, Riot has released a Mythic Chroma for the popular skin ‘Final Boss Veigar’ on the PBE (Public Beta Environment). Unlike the green visual effects of the main skin, this Mythic Chroma boasts a cool blueish hue. Take a look at the comparison below to witness the striking distinctions.

Pricing and Community Response

Like the Emberwoken chromas, the Final Boss Veigar Mythic Chroma and all future Mythic Chromas will be priced at 40 Mythic Essence. However, this steep cost for a mere recolored visual effect has triggered a negative response from the community.

Skin Spotlights took to Twitter to calculate the total cost of unlocking the blue version of Final Boss Veigar and the skin. For players without any Mythic Essence saved up, it would require spending a staggering 4220 RP. Understandably, players feel that chromas are already overpriced, and paying 40 ME solely for a recolored visual effect is exorbitant. Nevertheless, the allure of customization may still entice fans to invest in these premium options.

As the changes are currently in the PBE stage, Riot is open to feedback on the Reddit thread. Depending on the response, they may consider adjusting the pricing. However, this could prove challenging, given that the Ashen Knight Pyke Chroma has already been sold for 40 ME.
