How Solar Ignition and Scorch Operate in Destiny 2

Season of the Haunted introduced various new features to Destiny 2, including the updated Solar subclass as part of the 3.0 revamp. In an effort to refresh long-standing systems, Bungie has enhanced all light subclasses (Void, Solar, and Arc) to align them more closely with the innovative Stasis subclass. This update enables players to utilize Aspects and Fragments to further personalize their builds.

While Void 3.0 received widespread acclaim with the Season of the Risen/The Witch Queen, the reception for Solar 3.0 has been more mixed. Nevertheless, Bungie is committed to refining the Solar subclass to make it as exhilarating as Stasis and Void.

A critical aspect emphasized in the 3.0 subclasses is the utilization of keywords. Volatility and Weakened states took the spotlight in the Void subclass, while Ignition and Scorch are at the forefront for Solar.

The majority of builds will revolve around maximizing damage from ignition blasts and scorching enemies. If you’re new to Destiny 2 or need a refresher on how these mechanics work, this guide will provide the information you seek.

How Scorch Functions in Destiny 2

Scorch is a debuff that inflicts damage over time and can be applied through Solar abilities such as grenades, melee attacks, and sometimes Supers, as well as specific weapons. When hit by Solar damage, enemies will be singed. The scorch effect can be stacked, meaning the more times you scorch an enemy, the greater the damage it will take over time.

To fully leverage the benefits of scorching targets, players must synergize armor mods, increase stats like Discipline or Strength, and equip weapons that enhance scorching effects.

Why is this important? Well, once enough scorch stacks have been applied to a single enemy, they will ignite.

How Ignition Works in Destiny 2

Ignition occurs when enough scorch stacks have been placed on an enemy. This triggers a powerful Solar explosion that deals damage within an area around the target, making it ideal for clearing out zones teeming with enemies.

Consistently triggering both Scorch and Ignition effects can be advantageous, as specific Fragments provide buffs when you do so. For instance, Ember of Singein grants a faster class ability recharge when scorching targets.

It’s crucial to note that these effects are not mutually exclusive. You can activate Solar explosions instantly without waiting for scorch stacks to accumulate.

To optimize Solar 3.0, it is recommended to use weapons that synergize well with the subclass. This includes Solar exotic weapons or firearms with the Firefly perk, as the resulting explosion is of Solar nature.

Weapons like Ace of Spades, which possess Firefly, are becoming highly sought after. The Sunshot exotic hand cannon is another example, as it does not require precision kills to trigger Solar explosions. Take a deep dive into your vault to identify which guns can harmonize wonderfully with Solar 3.0.

If you struggle to trigger solar ignition, the new Incandescent perk proves invaluable. Opulent weapons offer this perk, so be sure to pursue Opulent Keys to acquire them.
