Varl the Destroyer Storyline

Renowned for their ferocity, the Orc tribes that inhabit the lands surrounding Felwin’s Gate have established themselves as a formidable force. They roam the trade routes and plains as brigands or mercenaries. Varl, the leader of a vicious band of sellswords, gained infamy with every village he razed.

Varl’s authority over the Gaellen Pact warriors seemed unbreakable until an enigmatic Gnarlhorn shaman spurred the Skinwalkers, under Varl’s command, to mutiny. They deserted and fled north into the lands of Aravia. Fueled by rage, Varl turned his entire band around and relentlessly pursued the deserters. The two forces clashed, and many Skinwalkers fell, but the Shaman escaped further north with a few followers.

Varl tracked them like a hungry wolf, seeking vengeance for the insult he suffered. Eventually, he caught up with the traitors in an ancient grove in the southernmost reaches of High Elven lands. He launched a fierce attack, confident of victory. However, the Shaman had already found what he sought – an ancient artifact hidden at the heart of the grove. Conducting a terrible ritual in Siroth’s name, he imbued his fighters with the power of Darkness. The battle was fierce and bloody, with the outnumbered Skinwalkers’ unnatural resilience and strength turning the tide. Varl realized his orcs were losing heart and would soon flee.

Refusing to accept defeat, Varl ordered the trees to be set ablaze, hoping to take down his foes with him. This gamble saved Varl’s life, as the source of the Shaman’s power perished in the flames, and the battle turned once more. Orc mercenaries surged forward and threw the Skinwalkers into the inferno. Varl himself slew the Shaman in single combat, claiming his skull as a trophy.

Victorious but gravely injured, the chieftain commanded his remaining forces to retreat. However, a horde of High Elves from Aravia descended upon his trail, summoned to investigate the desecrated sacred grove of Lumaya. To them, Varl was a savage brute responsible for the sacrilege. Negotiations were impossible, and the orcs were too weak to resist.

Salvation arrived unexpectedly when the Arbiter, a flame-haired woman, intervened. She offered Varl a chance to save his kin and make amends for his crimes. Instead of dying by blade or arrow, he would become an immortal guardian of the Doom Tower, a prison she had built for Teleria’s most dangerous monsters. It was a grim duty that Varl accepted, his only opportunity for redemption. Perhaps one day, a hero will arise and defeat the evil within the Doom Tower. Until then, Varl the Destroyer stands watch, as he has for centuries.
